Barack Obama, at a Memorial Day event in Las Cruces, N.M., credited his great-uncle, Charlie Payne, as being among the U.S. troops who liberated the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.

The trouble with that bit of history -- as the Republican National Committee pointed out today -- is that the Soviet Red Army was the military force that liberated the World War II death camp.

The RNC seized the opportunity to fire off a news release, saying that â??unless his uncle was serving in the Red Army, thereâ??s no way Obamaâ??s statement yesterday can be true. Obamaâ??s frequent exaggerations and outright distortions raise questions about his judgment and his readiness to lead as commander in chief.â?�

The Obama campaign soon acknowledged that the Democratic candidate made a mistake. It explained that Obamaâ??s great-uncle was in the 89th Infantry Division that helped liberate another notorious death camp, Buchenwald. Obama, the campaign said, â??is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II -- especially the fact that his great-uncle was part of liberating of one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald.â?�

All of which raises the question: What's worse, Obama's apparent gaffe or the RNC pouncing on a Holocaust-related historical mistake for political advantage?

Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki responded with this comment: "Sen. Obama thinks Memorial Day is a day to honor our nation's veterans, not a day for political posturing."

So proud of their service and accomplishments that he forgot what the real story was...hmmmm. As for myself, if my grandfather or great uncle was involved in that it would be etched into my brain out of pride and respect.

"Sen. Obama thinks Memorial Day is a day to honor our nation's veterans, not a day for political posturing.".....SURE, it's alright for him to bring up a historical mistake for political posturing but ya better not question it or invite the S.O.B. to a trip to Iraq because that's wrong.

Im sorry P4B, but Barack Obama, hell any Dem., is the better choice over Sen. John McCain. You may not agree with me, but we need SOME CHANGE in our government. I VERY much agree with ya. I don't give a rats ass which side of the aisle it is, they both have done their part in fucking things up. Now if a buisiness is in trouble, would you have the CEO of one that is in trouble try to do the repairs? Doesn't make sense to me at all.
