McCain likes idea of traveling to Iraq with Obama: After criticizing Democratic opponent Sen. Barack Obama for not having been to Iraq since 2006, Republican presidential contender Sen. John McCain on Monday endorsed the idea of a trip together to the war zone. In an interview with the AP, McCain said such a trip "would be fine" and that he would "seize that opportunity to educate Senator Obama along the way." Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a McCain supporter, brought up the idea over the weekend. McCain has been to Iraq about every six months since the war there began in March 2003. Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said that the Democratic candidate "thinks Memorial Day is a day to honor our nation's veterans, not a day for political posturing." McCain supports the troop "surge" and has opposed calls to start bringing U.S. forces home. Obama says he would immediately start withdrawing troops if he becomes president.

Obama is an open minded man that wants to have open discussions with the leaders of states that back terrorism....I'm sure he should have NO PROBLEM of reaching across the political aisle and make the trip with McCain.

In his critique, McCain also referenced Obama's plan for a calendar to draw down troop presence, painting it as an unjustifiable and uninformed move. "For him to talk about dates for withdrawal -- which basically is surrender -- in Iraq after we're succeeding so well is I think really inexcusable," he said.

Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki responded with this comment: "Sen. Obama thinks Memorial Day is a day to honor our nation's veterans, not a day for political posturing."
