Can Hemp plants be crossed with Marijuana plants?

I've heard that Hemp plants used in the agricultural industry is genetically different than a marijuana plant, yet still produces the leaves commonly used to signify a marijuana plant. While the Hemp plant produces these same leaves, it produces virtually no THC.

Question: are they really genetically different, or are Hemp plants just bred to contain no THC?

hemp isn't really a different species, that's why all the political resistance to legalizing hemp farming ... it's simply cannabis that was bred for many years for properties other than psychoactive ... (rope-making, paper, oil, etc) ... the THC has just been bred out of it's makeup ... we called it 'ditchweed' back in central Illinois, pretty much zero THC presence ... smoke a ton of it, just get a headache ... I know a lot of activists like to claim it's a whole 'nother species, but you won't convince the farmers of that ... yes, you can easily cross hemp with medical cannabis, but it would be like pouring water into good sippin' whiskey

Technically speaking the Cannabis Sativa is the best plant for Hemp. Hemp is actually the Fibers from the Cannabis plant. The fiber contains no THC nor do the leaves. Why, I'm not sure but under strict definition HEMP refers to the fiber from the stalk and leaves to make everything from Fuel for cars to Food for humans and animals (not to mention Medicine from Delta 9 THC containing Cannabis. :smokin:.) I live in Iowa where marijuana is considered as addictive as heroin by Sen Tom Harkin :admin1: (D-IA.) Where during WWII the farmers of Iowa were required by law to grow hemp for rope even though it was illegal the Gov't made the growing of Industrial Hemp by farmers legal during WWII. The Hemp plants still tower over the 12' high corn along the fence rows at harvest time. But smoke 3 joints and you get a headache only from Industrial Hemp. As pointed out above the THC was bred out of Industrial Hemp. All the info I have here came from reading about Cannabis and Hemp via :google: Peace...:bigsmoke::greenthumb:

yup, eltone has it right  ... it was grown all over the Midwest for the Navy's rope during WWII ... most of it was shipped by rail to Peoria, Illinois, where the 'Broderick and Bascomb Rope Mfg. Co.' made the rope ... all over the Midwest, the hempseeds rolled out the train doors, and they are STILL spraying the railroad tracks to kill it, to this day :S2: (how come THEY can't stamp it out, and we're killing them by accident ??) :wtf:

Hemp is the Male species of the cannabis family while the buds we smoke is the female species. Hemp used for taxtiles are breed especialy for no THC less than .05%. Hemp is breed for other things as well and needs to be breed for even more. A good example is the oil from hemp is much more productive in making fuel than any other oil including petrolum, and it grows in a matter of 3 months or less in some areas.

    Hemp male

    Bud Female

right now in france you can buy hemp lumber for building homes, and it is fire resistant and chemical resistant.

    Species:
    C. sativa
    C. indica
    C. ruderalis
There are a couple subspecies that some scientists would classify within each of those.
But gender has nothing to do with species. Your mom was a Homo sapiens too, even though YOU'RE the one with the junk.

    C. ruderalis, or Siberian hemp, contains virtually useless amounts of THC but is valuable for breeding the autoflower trait into 'drug' type cannabis. Lowryder is an example of a Rudi hybrid.
All the species within the genus can interbreed and produce viable offspring.
