My tap water has a ppm of 300 and ive been buying disstilled water, and i was woundering could a water filter for $200-$300 make the water pure enough to be at about 50 ppm

a simple cartridge filter should remove quite a bit of iron and calcium, lowering your ppm to where you'd like it ... however, the iron and calcium, magnesium, etc., that you just filtered out, will have to be replaced with CalMag+, and you will still have to evaporate the chlorine out ... kind of a 'Catch-22' situation :wtf: ... I wouldn't worry about it, if your total ppm with nutes is in the right range ... my total ppm never reaches as high a level, as others I see in here, and my plants are doing fine :jointsmile:

Filtration, distillation, reverse osmosis, and ion-exchange (softeners) are all different.

Filtration removes only suspended solids.
Ion-exchange replaces minerals with metals (potassium or sodium) that can scorch your plants.
Distillation isn't all that efficient.
For growing, you'll want reverse osmosis.

and, with Reverse-Osmosis filters, you will HAVE to use CalMag+ to replace the missing calcium, iron, and magnesium ... just so you're aware ... :smokin:

Heres what it comes down to. Reverse Osmosis is going to clear the canvas for you. Get you down to pretty pure water and then you can perfectly control the nutrients. I do it. But it may not be necessary for you.

Hard water will effectively reduce yield (because of what I said before).
