there is something your missing.....it's going to be hard to explain the physics but when you go to suck the water it's going to bubble and just fall back down......inorder for it to act like a straw it would have to have a constant water supply to feed from so no air got in the lines so air (or smoke in this case) is lighter than water. that is why the smoke bubbles quickly to the top when smoking out of a water bong......when the smoke is put into the water (or sucked in this case) it will send the bubles through like normally (as long as there is no space above the water for air to get through) and by motion of gravity the water will travel back down the the bottom..... now if you take in a ccount for how small ammount of water this is and how big the bubbles are going to be it's not going to be very effective because some smoke will get through unfiltered.....but it would be more filtered than if you just smoked out of it plain.
