Teen Marijuana Use Linked to Later Illness..wtf?

I fail to see it as a straight cause-and-effect relationship, and think that the Post's article is irresponsible. Far more likely that many teens who are using marijuana at a young age - don't take this the wrong way- already have other risk factors for later problems.

SSRIs have become famous for their alleged ability to induce children to violence and suicide in such high profile cases as that of Christopher Pittman who ran away from his home in Florida to his grandparents in South Carolina at age 12. He is suspected of having killed his grandparents and burned down their house after being treated with Paxil followed by Zoloft.

SSRI antidepressants have been implicated in a number of the school shootings: Shooters alleged to be on antidepressants at the time of their attacks include:

    # 18-year old Eric Harris on Luvox who with Dylan Klebold killed 13 and wounded 22 people April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School in Littleton Colorado

    # 15-year-old Kip Kinkel on Prozac killed his parents and then proceeded to school where he opened fire on classmates, killing two and wounding 22 others

    # 14-year-old Elizabeth Bush on antidepressants when she wounded one student at Bishop Neumann High School in Williamsport, Pa.

18-year-old Jason Hoffman on Effexor and Celexa when he wounded one teacher and three students at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, Calif.

Violent and suicidal behavior linked to SSRIs is not limited to adolescents. Fully one-third of all drug-related suicides since 1990 for which FDA has data are associated with Prozac use, according to Keith Altman of Fibonacci Group.

Add to that that all of them are children that got posession of guns... *most* from their parents home because the guns weren't kept disabled and/or locked up. Rather than being *PARENTS*, the kids mom and dad figured that the school would raise them. "Little Jonny is being bad, lets give him drugs".....Stoopid parents.

Teens who smoke marijuana are not more likely to be depressed.

Depressed teens just often smoke weed

Basically what I see here are all the old bullshit arguments (well maybe not ALL) surroundin weed used to support some new idea. 60% of all first time smokers are under the age of 18, so what? In my experience you try almost everything before the age of 18. The argument that more kids are in treatment for pot than for alcohol just meand that more judges out there told them: "Hey you can do a few months of treatment or you can do some jail time." I know that same thing happened to me a few times. The part about minority teens being more depressed than white teens, HA! I'm sure it has nothing to do with racial inequality in our country today, it's all weed's fault.:wtf:

This article and the original use of marijuana as a tool that was used to help "control" the mexicans are quite similar. Now they are repacking it and using it as a tool for not just mexicans, but all minorities!

I also agree that, even with my tin-hattery of using pot to target a race/etc, I see no reasonable causal link between pot and depression. It is a chicken and egg argument.

I wonder how many of the pot smoking depressed teens were on prescribed medication at the same time?

BS studies like this drive me nuts. It really is rediculous how the government feels as though they have to make things up to try to scare us into not doing something that is perfictly safe. They are just so into acting as though they have never been wrong in their lives and want to act as though they were making a good dicision when they made marijuana illegal. It is really sad about how people act towards marijuana, they just need to go smoke a joint....

It's hard to say what the cause and effect is here. It's sort of circular logic to say that marijauna causes depression among those who smoke marijana because they are already depressed.

However, even though I love weed, I think it is not necessarily good for young people whose minds and personalities are still developing. I'd say the same thng about alcohol and other drugs. There is a huge amount of mental and emotional development happening when you are a teenager, and it seems reasonable to me that you could mess some of that up with excessive pot smoking, especially if you were also dealing with depression or other emotional issues.

We forget because we think of marijuana as something that's the least dangerous of illicit drugs, but far more teens are in treatment for dependency on marijuana than alcohol," Walters said.
Why does this idiot still have a job?John Walters the reason why teens are in treatment for MJ dependency is because its either that or go to jail you dumbass. But you already know that because without this war on drugs you would probably be flipping burgers somewhere......One of our Liberal Senators in Canada here, after hearing him talk of the evils of MJ called him an idiot right on camera..
