The population of the U.S. is 304 million. The amount of people getting food stamps is less than ten percent of the entire population. That's not great, but it's certainly not a "depression".
Does Syria even have food stamps for the poor and indigent in their country? I'm sure that a high percentage of people in Europe get food benefits from their governments.

"Two wars of aggression"? I don't know that Iraq should have been invaded, seeing that the alleged weapons of mass destruction that were never found, but the invasion of Afghanistan certainly was justified - if not completely successful in some ways.
