Cannabis and sea-sickness (motion sickness)
I love the water, and I always have. I love surfing, I love swimming, I love sailing (on lakes), but for some reason being on a boat on the ocean gets me sea sick if there are any waves at all (and there usually are waves on the open ocean). I'm talking severe nausea and vomiting. I've tried over-the-counter meds for sea-sickness (Dramamine, etc.) and none has ever worked. My father in law recently won a chartered ocean fishing trip. I want to go, but I know that once I get out there I will regret it if I get sick.
The other day the thought crossed my mind: if marijuana supposedly is beneficial for helping chemotherapy patients with nausea problems, would it also relieve nausea related to sea-sickness or motion sickness? Has anyone ever tried this? If so, which strain did you use? I think I currently have a strong sativa. It makes my thoughts race *a lot*... which may be good for taking my mind off nausea. Then again, I've read that indica "body highs" are great for nausea, however I don't know of a dealer who I can request an indica strain from.
My father in law doesn't know I toke. I would either have to bake some brownies to eat before leaving or bring a lightbulb vape with me for a little "self-dosing" in the bathroom. However, there is the additional issue of being stoned with my father in law. :stoned: LOLjsn9333 Reviewed by jsn9333 on . Well... even when made with sativa strains, the effects of food with weed are frequently indica-like... so you could make some brownies with the weed you have, and try them.
And BTW, being stoned in the sea must be amazing... :rastasmoke:

Cannabis and sea-sickness (motion sickness)
Hi jsn9333 , I have never tried marijuana for motion sickness, but I have Diabetic Neuropathic Gastro Paresis, which means my stomach muscles used to digest food are paralyzed. This leaves me surfing waves of nausea from mild to severe every hour of everyday. If the nausea is not controlled it leads to violent vomiting sessions that are totally dibilitating and require 48-72 hours for recovery. Inhalation of cannabis smoke/vapors is the fastest, most effective and safest drug for the control of chronic nausea. Regalen/Metroclopramide (the most commonly prescribed anti-nausea med) causes irreversible Parkinson like shakes and tremors if taken for very long, and this is legal??? If you could turn it into an edible since smoking is not an option it will still work. Unlike Marinol, which only contains 1 of the cannabinoids of the hundreds there are in marijuana, your home made brownies, or whatever, will contain all the cannabinoids, like Sativex nasal spray. I haven't tried that for it is not approved in the USA but is in Canada and many parts of Europe. But I have a prescription for Marinol since MMJ is illegal where I live. The best strain of cannabis I have found in controlling nausea is the "Orange Kush" I'm not sure of it's cross but I know it is a hybred and is Indica but there might be some sativa in there also, I'm not sure but someone here will know this, I'd hate to cook it just because it tases so good when smoked, also when you eat it it takes at least an hour to work and for some it is a stronger body high that lasts 6-8 hours as oppossed to 2-4 hrs for smoking. Also if you eat it you won't have to sneak off to smoke it (just don't let the wrong person eat one.) So if your are going to eat it try it before you do it in front of non cannabis friendly people so you know the dose best for you. Peace and enjoy...:420thought:

Thank you for the responses. Thank you especially, elton, for sharing about your condition. I can't imagine how difficult that must be. I know when I am sea-sick it is like the worst feeling *ever*.
I'm curious as to how much you "dose" yourself with to control your nausea from the Diabetic Neuropathic Gastro Paresis. I have seen studies on the effectiveness of THC for this sort of thing, and one in particular used a dosage of between 5 and 15 mg THC. That seemed awfully low to me since I think a joint can have up to 200 mg of THC. I suspect some of the studies used as little THC as possible in order to avoid "stoned" side effects, and I'm wondering if the anti-nausea effect would be even greater if the patient was willing to get a little "stoned" with a higher dose of THC.
So, how much do you find works the best for you? Like an average "cigarette" type joint, or less, or more? Or is it just a matter of "the more stoned I am, the less nauseous I am."
Also, if you take a "dose" are you good for the day, or do you receive the anti-nausea effect only as long as you are "high" so to speak?
Thanks again for sharing.

Marijuana can range anywhere from 2% THC (very bad schwag) to 20% THC (very good dank bud). I've even seem some strains advertised as 26% THC.
So, assume a strain that is 20% THC, and assume an average size joint has 1 gram of bud in it. 1 gram equals 1000 milligrams. So 20% of the 1000mg of bud in the joint would be THC. That means 200mg THC would be in such a joint.
Then the question is, how much of that THC actually makes it into your system? From the website below, it seems anywhere from 20% to 50% makes it into your system when a joint is smoked. So that would be (high end) 100mg. The website below also says smoking a joint with bud that has 2% THC resulted in an estimated dose 13.0 mg THC, so that seems about right.
I want to eliminate the sea-sickness, so I want to make sure to take as much as is needed to have that effect. I just don't know how much that is. I also don't want to be fried out of my mind with my father in law. Or who knows... maybe that would make the trip just that much more fun!
I guess what I'll do is maybe make some cannabutter with 1/4 of a gram of weed and eat it a couple hours before leaving on the fishing trip. With my weed, I'm thinking that would be around 20mg or so of THC... maybe more if eating it is more efficient then smoking it. Hopefully that would be plenty since some of the trials I've found saw effective nausea relief at 15mg dosages.
Then I'll bring a mini-lightbulb vaporizer with me and another gram or so of weed. Worst case, if I get nauseous, I'll just lightbulb vape a little in the bathroom and see if that helps. As long as I make sure to err on the side of not burning the weed, and hold my hits, I don't think I would cause any sort of smell by vaping in the bathroom. I could also have a little can of air freshener with me just in case.

I've had wonderful anti-nausea/munchies results from the strains Hindu Kush and Foxy's Rhinofuck (White Rhino x Yeag's MTF). Best of luck- I love the sea too, and couldn't imagine being kept from it by something as frustrating as queasiness.

I don't know if it's quackery, but they have those anti-seasickness wristbands, such as the "Sea Band". I've used them and they seemed to prevent me from getting carsick on long rides. Marijuana deifinitely helps.

I think the wristbands work on a pressure point principle. They're certainly worth a shot, perhaps combined with an OTC medication and cannabis... I wish I could remember the name of the one I was told to use when I fished out of Dutch. I don't get seasick in anything less than 30 foot waves, lol, but the stuff worked FANTASTIC for the couple nasty storms I've gone though. Shoot.
Don't drink, bring dry bread or crackers, and a couple oranges to suck on in case you do get thirsty.
