You are probably thinking of Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., 1888-1969. Kennedy engaged in bootlegging during prohibition, and made a fortune from it, but he was well established in the world of business and politics before that. The Kennedy fortune was (is) immense, but nowhere near that of the Rockefeller family.
