John D. Rockefeller, Sr. 1839-1937, was an American industrialist and founder of Standard Oil. He abstained from liquor and tobacco and was never involved in bootlegging. He was the richest person in America, possibly even in history, and a major philanthropist

You are probably thinking of Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., 1888-1969. Kennedy engaged in bootlegging during prohibition, and made a fortune from it, but he was well established in the world of business and politics before that. The Kennedy fortune was (is) immense, but nowhere near that of the Rockefeller family.
