He was an anthropology student who was studying traditional Mexican/Indian use of entheogens and travelled to Mexico to meet a man who knew a lot about it named Don Juan. Anyways, this guy turns out to be this mystic guru hallucinogenic plants/spirituality expert, and Castaneda lives with him for like 2 years and takes a ton of shrooms and datura and mescaline and records all of his trips and what Don Juan taught him.
