Steel or rubber trash can grow space?
A friend would like to do a closet stealth grow with just a plant or two for personal consumption. He is thinking of three options and would like your feedback on the following:
1. Single (not clamshell) 32 gallon rubber tote bin
Pros:
Looks at home in the closet.
Multiple (2 or 3) short plants
Easy to cut
Cheapest
Cons:
Requires paint or mylar
Shallow
2. 32 gallon rubber trash can
Pros:
Able to grow much bigger/taller (single?) plant
Easy to cut
Cons:
Not as sturdy
Requires paint or mylar
3. 32 gallon galvanized steel trash can
Pros:
Should be reflective enough without anything added
Very sturdy for mounting lights and fans and such
Cons:
Looks out of place
Might be warmer?
Harder to cut/saw
50-100 % more expensive
He is not going to build/buy a cabinet so please limit your thoughts on these three. He is leaning heavily towards the steel can despite the drawbacks because of its reflective nature and strength for mounting lights, lowering chains and fans and would generally prefer a (taller?) sativa over an indica.
Any thoughts for this old timer, but new farmer?RackitMan Reviewed by RackitMan on . Steel or rubber trash can grow space? It's probably not as reflective as you think. Brushed aluminum won't be as refelctive as mylar or flat white paint.
My choice would be 32 gallon, painted white on the inside or black/white plastic.
4 CFL's mounted to a base that can be suspended by chains and raised and lowered top down.
I would drill some vent holes in the top and sides and drainage holes in the bottom.
One small desk fan inside the can mounted to the top blowing indirectly on the plants.
You can however, get more square footage with two rubbermaid containers put top to top or a rubbermaid deck box and grow some bonsai style plants.
Good luck either way.
