Israeli leaders snub Jimmy Carter
JERUSALEM (AP) â?? Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is currently an unpopular figure in Israel, though he brokered its first peace treaty with an Arab nation, Egypt, in 1979.
Carter met Sunday with Israel's ceremonial president, Shimon Peres, at the beginning of a week-long Mideast tour, but Israel's political leadership is avoiding him. Israel's perception is that in the 30 years since he got Israel and Egypt together, Carter has turned hostile toward Israel, while favoring the Palestinians.
Israeli and U.S. officials are particularly peeved that he has also chosen to meet in Syria with the leader of the militant Hamas movement, blacklisted by Washington and Jerusalem as a terrorist organization.
In an interview published Monday in Israel's Haaretz daily, Carter responded to criticism by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, saying that the State Department had been informed of the schedule for his week-long Mideast tour and had not tried to dissuade him from seeing exiled Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal in Damascus, Syria.
Hamas is sworn to Israel's destruction and has carried out dozens of suicide bombings that have killed more than 250 Israelis. Israel has no contacts with the Islamic militant group, whose violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in June has complicated newly revived efforts by Israel and the Palestinians to strike a final peace deal.

Way to go Jimmy! I guess the old saying of wisdom and age going hand in hand doesn't apply here; he's as big of an idiot as he was when he was president. Piss on our allie...lets meet with some group the world considers as terrorists. This should help the DNC's efforts.
