I have lived in California all my life. My grandparents live in Fairfax, which is north of S.F. They have made it through the major earthquakes for the last 60yrs+. They are scary but also have a low number of life loss. I know that the MMJ is expensive (typically between $60-$80 AN 1/8!!!), but with you coming from North East Coast this might not bee too much of a payment shock. You are going to notice a drastic improvement in quality. S.F. does have some of the highest quality strains available in all of North America.

I am not very familiar with the current employment opportunities in S.F. (I know skywalker ranch is up there, and a creative consultant job for ILM would probably be fun, but seriously you might want to check out monster.com or something like that) Finding work anywhere is difficult right now, you need to be willing to learn new and uncommon skill sets........ maybe growing?

Sorry couldn't be more help..... have you considered going even more north? I know that Northern California has an abundance of high quality cannabis and good employment opportunities. Check Eurika, Arcada and even more north, you will find something. :S5:
