In this case, they are going to learn their lesson the hard way, as it seems most people want to see them tried like adults...or not even tried at all but beaten senseless.
The rule of the streets is: If someone hits you, you hit them back several times, much harder. They deserve to have the shit kicked out of them - enough to be hospitalized for a long time.

Their lawyers are going to ask for community service, and no prison time.

The are not "stupid like most kids". Most "kids" do not act this way. I grew up in Brooklyn, and have first hand experience with extremely brutal kids and adults and, although there are far worse cases of juvenile delinquency all over the country, this is still shocking. These people are between 14 and 18 years old. That is certainly old enough to know that you don't attack people for fun. The victim may even lose her hearing in one ear.

Whatever happens to them, will probably not be enough - because the victim has to live with this for the rest of her life.
