A group of teenage girls beat another, crazy video
If we are going to look at this in terms of 'rules of the streets' then what those 8 kids did to the one girl is perfectly ok. She dissed them publicly so they kicked her ass publicly. Rules of the streets are for animals, not reasonable human beings.

If a 15 year old steals some candy from a store he is tried via juvenile corrections process. If that same 15 year old hits a man in the head with a bat and kills him he would most likely be tried as an adult. What is the difference? A crime is a crime. Just because the crime is more serious doesn't mean the individual is any less a minor. If minors are charged as minors for some crimes but not others, why even have a court system designed for them?
You don't think a lifetime of having to bear such a horrible stigma is punishment enough? On top of that there will be tons of legal penalties the kids will have to face. The victim's physical wounds will heal for the most part, she will get over the psychological effects after a little time passes, her life will continue normally. The attackers on the other hand will never be able to live this down, and it happened to them at such a young age that their lives are pretty much ruined forever. They won't be able to go into public without feeling paranoid that people want to kick their ass.

"They ruined their lives"! They were LAUGHING at what they did, and actually put it on YouTube. They have no regrets, other than getting caught.

STIGMA ???????? WTF ?
Ever heard the saying "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time ?
Bleeding hearts will tell us they are misunderstood or some such BS.
No wonder kids run riot when people stand up for them even when the evidence proves them to be nothing more than vicious bullies who think it's fun to beat someone so badly and then post it for other sick fucks to watch.
Lock the bastards up and give them a kicking twice daily.

Yeah, I agree that the punishment should fit the crime in this instance. I'm not advocating more senseless violence, but harsh legal penalties should be brought against them. Their age makes little difference to me, they willingly tortured a person over some ignorant cause, and for that, they shouldn't be allowed to forget their crime. If I were to beat the living shit out of someone in my house, all over some silly dispute, but I did it with intentions of preventing her from leaving (kidnapping), and with full intentions of displaying my bravado and malicious intentions on the internet, then I'd expect a harsh penalty to be brought down on me. (Damn, that was a long sentence.) Anything otherwise wouldn't be very fair to my victim.
Either way, these brats need more than a slap on the wrist. They need a big slap of reality, so they'll realize that they may have just royally fucked their lives up over something trivial and stupid.

Wrongdoers? On the streets there is no such thing as that. Wrongdoer is objective.

Regardless if they have a guilty conscious or not they are going to have to live with the stigma of the morons who beat up another girl and posted it on youtube. Plus I think it is unfair to say that the kids won't ever feel guilty about it. I'm sure it is getting drilled into their heads right now just how idiotic and wrong what they did was. The only way they could not feel any remorse is if they were sociopaths.

They were laughing when they did it, but I'm sure they arn't laughing anymore. The whole country hates them. Again, I think it is unfair to assume that they do not regret what they did. They disgraced themselves and their families, that is the worst punishment of all.

I was not advocating for the attackers to be treated any less than the criminals that they are, but they are just kids. In our society kids are treated differently by the law than adults. I do not claim that these kids are misunderstood or should be let away with just a slap on the wrist, but honestly, what is locking them up for a few years gonna teach them that one ass kicking won't? (that their parents should be doing to them) The fact that they video tapped the attack, then put it on youtube with all their faces visible shows just how stupid these kids are, and they are gonna pay for their stupidity for the rest of their lives.

I agree with this, but I still hold my view that these are just kids and should be treated as such. I think it is a little too early in those people's lives to act like they are vicious and bloodthirsty at their core, I think when it comes down to it they were just being stupid kids doing horrible things. They should be punished harshly, if only for the victim's sake, but the punishment should take into account the circumstances of the attack and the mental capacity of the attackers.

I feel sorry for the parents and grandparents of these children, who've been receiving death threats from all across the U.S., and who are actually fearful of retaliation by someone looking to post a homicide on YouTube. I don't wish any form of physical reprisals on any of these kids, but I hope the justice system does make an example out of them. I'm not talking about life imprisonment, but I really don't want to see them walk away with a little community service, and nothing else. I was pretty wild as a kid, and I eventually got caught doing some really dumb things... subsequently, I got in some pretty serious legal trouble. I did my time, paid my fines, and came out with the knowledge that the lifestyle I was pursuing was nothing but trouble. Now, when I think back on it, I'm glad I got caught. It kept me in check, and prevented me from going down a really dark path in life.

For a whole 15 minutes, until the media moves on to something else. In 6 months we probably won't remember this in any detail.

Some sort of massive community service, 6 months served time, and massive fines paid to the victim (to the tune of the attackers are working it off for many years) seems like a "good" punishment to me.
