KANSAS CITYâ??Senator John McCain painted a highly positive picture of American progress in Iraq today as he implicitly criticized his Democratic competitors, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, for what he called a policy of â??withdraw and re-invadeâ?� and for basing their positions on the war on political ambition.

â??Those who disregard the unmistakable progress we have made in the last year and the terrible consequences that would ensue were we to abandon our responsibilities in Iraq have chosen another road,â??â?? Mr. McCain said in a speech to a gathering of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. â??It may appear to be the easier course of action, but it is a much more reckless one, and it does them no credit even if it gives them an advantage in the next election.â??â??

In remarks delivered a day before General David Petraeus, the commander of American forces in Iraq, is to testify before two committees and the three presidential candidates on Capitol Hill, Mr. McCain declared that the United States is â??no longer staring into the abyss of defeat.â??â??

Instead, he said, America â??can now look ahead to the genuine prospect of success.â??â??
Mr. McCain said the U.S. could achieve the goal of an Iraq that no longer needs American troops â??perhaps sooner than many imagine,â??â?? but called for no withdrawals, as Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama have. â??To promise a withdrawal of our forces from Iraq, regardless of the calamitous consequences to the Iraqi people, our most vital interests, and the future of the Middle East, is the height of irresponsibility,â??â?? Mr. McCain said. â??It is a failure of leadership.â??â??

We should just take their oil. It wouldn't pay us nearly what we deserve, but it's a start.

We've spent billions, lost thousands of lives, and our troops have sustained countless injuries to help the Iraqi people. It's about time we started to get some kind of reimbursement for our trouble.

Well, you certainly picked some smash-up reasons for despising an American presidential candidate! Your word may pull some serious clout with like-minded Canadians that are still in the dark about EVERYTHING American, but around here, eh, you're the one that sounds like a fanatical ranting buffoon. McCain isn't perfect, but he's the best candidate (that stands a chance at winning) that we have at the moment.

With that, I agree with you McCain is the best candidate if only because Obama and Hillary are that bad. They're all freakin' liars who will only worsen the economic crisis but McCain won't break up gaining revenue from Iraq for this war and more likely of the 3 to cut spending tho not in military which is where it should begin.

I remember the story. I just sense a good bit of anti-America sentiment coming from his end in many posts, and was pointing out that his attack on McCain was a little brash.

McCain understands the need to eventually draw down forces in Iraq, and I think many people take his "100 years in Iraq..." statement a little too seriously... that's about all the only mud they have to sling. The Dems are a much more interesting talking point, hands down, with all their misspeaking and wacky public charades, and much better candidates for the 'Most Likely To Ruin America' award... yet, these clowns have very little to say about them. McCain isn't ideal, but at least he understands the lessons that only suffering through a war can teach you, and would be much more likely to resolve the whole crisis without resorting to an all-out retreat from the very beginning of his tenure. The last thing we need is to be viewed as cowards by the radical groups still out there who are just looking for reasons to become emboldened.

There are ways to resolve the conflict in Iraq, but it's going to take time. Cutting & running isn't the answer, and it's all the Dems have to position themselves on.

Yes there are ways to resolve this conflict....get out of Iraq....the Iraqi people dont want you there the insurgents dont want you there...the only people who want you there is the puppet government that u put in charge....The people of Iraq have seen what the U.S democracy brings and things were better with saddam in charge.The iraqi people have suffered enough under U.S rule and as long as you kill innocent women and children they will kill u....

It is absolute ignorance to think we can just "get out of Iraq" instantaneously. Do you not realize that if we leave, we will simply create a void, which will ultimately result in a vacuum effect sucking up various terror outfits and eventually creating immense instability in the already turbulent middle eastern region.
Also simply leaving Iraq would send a message to the world that if you can hold out long enough against mighty America, eventually they will give up, and I'm sorry Fishman but as an American, I refuse to give up. no one is doubting that strategical errors were made in this war, but the fact of the matter is that weather we like it or not we are entrenched in Iraq. As Americans we have an obligation to our future sons and daughters to do what we can now in the present to make the future a safer place four our American children and leaving Iraq right now, In my opinion would do the exact opposite...:stoned:
