Young ones eat bugs. REALLY young carnivorous fishes feed on anything from zooplankton to the aquatic larval stages of insects such as mosquitoes, or on bloodworms, which can be found in the muck near the outflow of sewage treatment plants. When I used to work at a fish hatchery, it was my job to collect these things... lol. The baby walleye LOVED them, and it kept them from becoming cannibalistic. Many fish will eat smaller fish of their own species, so if you see a couple fingerlings getting really big really fast, put them in a different tank.
