    Goin to Amsterdam, any suggestions?

I am going to the Dam for the a few days with my girlfriend on March 21st and 22nd before heading off to Paris. I was wondering if anyone could shed some insight as to which hotels are best for the money, close to the coffee shops, etc. I would also like to know some of the coffee shops you guys an gals went to on your trips and which you found to have the best bud, best prices, and best environment for chilling. Any tips help! BTW, anyone know if the "Gray Area" is a good one, or is it just a tourist trap? THANKS!

You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet. - Franz Kafka.

i just got back and can recommend, if you cna afford it, the Renaissance in the centre. Its 5 mins walk from Centraal, and there's a coffee shop or 5 within 30 seconds of walking out the front door.
Failing that, there's tonnes of hostels that are cheap (but not as nice to just chill out in) and some of the bigger coffee shops have hotels above them

Amsterdam is the best, i been there a few times, a good place to stay is the bulldog hotel http://www.bulldog.nl/ , the atmosphere is great and it has a range of rooms from sharred to private and they are all really nice, its also the centre of the red light district which is cool as its about 10 mins walk from central station. There is a coffee shop next door to it aswell, its not the best coffee shop but if you run out and cant b bothered walking far its usefull.

Some of my fav coffee shops....... pink floyd is cool, good weed. The last waterhole is good aswell, they have good weed all the time and live music most nights if your into that. Central always seems to have some nice blueberry aswell.

    I would avoid the grasshoper......rip off !!!!

here are some sites that are usefull esp the coffee shop map http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/ACDfrmGu.html

This link has some up to date weed reviews

    A gentle warning:

As you walk the streets of old amstedam, particularly the areas around the redlight district, beware the men who come out after dark, and will stand on the corners of canals and streets. You will know them becuase when you walk past, you will immediately hear:
    "coca? Extasy? Cocaaain?"

For the safety of both you and your wallet, ignore these people. Every time I've heard about people using these guys, they got ripped off one way or another, sometimes just loosing a bit of money, sometimes loosing all the moeny they had on them.
Even if you get refused entry to a coffeeshop because of your age or something, DO NOT USE THESE GUYS!!!

The Van Gough museum is worth a look when you have just left a coffee shop, although it can be a bit busy & intense.
Avoid Smullers fast food as well, its vile, but there is an excellent juice bar in the station.

    .

The first day i was there I was like "no thanks" which to them meant follow you up the street and keep bothering you. The 2nd day i just shook my head "no". By day 3 i just totally ignored the scum. By prepared to hit them, strike 1st if you feel at all threatened. No one in amsterdam has a gun. But if these people think they can intimidate you they will.
That kind of sounds scary, it really is no more dangerous than london or new york. Walk confidently and ignore these people.
