People with long ancestral lines in England are all no more than a 25th cousin to each other. A lot of them are 10th cousins, or closer. It's not "inbreeding", as in close family members currently breeding among themselves.

I am a 9th cousin 3X removed to G.W. Bush, through Mayflower Passenger John Howland, and one of his daughters.

I am also a 10th cousin to Barrack Obama through Susannah Hinckley and Rev. John Smith. Bush is my 11th cousin through Samual Hinckley and Sara Soole, Susannah's parents. This is the relationship that the study is about. I believe that the Hinckley's had something like 13 children.

These relationships were in the 17th century. It's not "inbreeding". If your family has been in the British Isles for many centuries, you have similar cousinships - possibly with royalty or famous people. Similar relationships exist in all other European countries. In most less-developed countries, they are still marrying their 1st and 2nd cousins.

You very well could be related to Blair, Bush, or any number of famous people with British ancestry.

I have Winston Churchill as a 10th cousin (approximatly), as does Obama, but through a different line.

Because there were few people in the American Colonies, family records are easier to track than in Europe. This allowed me to prove my pedigree well enough to be accepted for memberships in the Mayflower Society, Sons of the Revolution, and other similar organizations.

My famly has a long history of inbreeding. It's not exaclty what you would call a RULE --- you can marry someone outside the immediate family as long as they have an unusually large, pumpkin-shaped head. In fact I was all set to marry this girl outside the family until we found out she was still a virgin. "Hell!" said my Pa, "If she ain't good 'nuff fer her own family, she ain't good 'nuff fer ours!"
