Obama Tells Vets No Lower Drinking Age
SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) â?? Democrat Barack Obama on Monday promised Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans help with their grievances â?? save one. "I know it drives you nuts. But I'm not going to lower the drinking age," the presidential candidate said.
Army veteran Ernest Johnson, 23, of Connecticut, said one of the things that peeved him before he turned 21 was that he couldn't come home and drink a beer â?? even though he was old enough to serve in the armed services and die for his country.
Obama told Johnson he sympathized, but that setting the legal drinking age at 21 had helped reduce drunken driving incidents and should remain.

So much for the 18-21 year old demographic. I seriously wonder if this "assclown" want's to lose. Old enough to go into battle but can't drink? Bullets are more hazardous than beer last I heard.

Obama Tells Vets No Lower Drinking Age
Finally, something we can agree on P4B. I'm 18 and in college, and I actually don't like drinking, so something like this wouldn't affect me too much either way, it's just the principle of the thing.

Obama Tells Vets No Lower Drinking Age
This is just more b.s. in my book. When I turned 18 that was the legal drinking age and should have remained the same. If your old enough to vote and die in battle then you should be able to pound a shot of Jack!
Was raising the drinking age effective?
Nobody really knows! That question is still being debated to this day. The facts show that there are less people dying from drunk driving accidents today than in the mid 80's, but it cannot definitely be contributed to the higher drinking age.
One problem with these figures is that in the mid 80's seat belt laws were created. That means that there were less fatal car accidents overall, so the number of alcohol related traffic fatalities had to go down. The only two sources for tracking the number of people driving drunk are arrest reports and autopsy reports. Limiting the number of fatalities makes the drunk driving figures go down, even if the number of drunk drivers remains the same.
Another factor that skews the figures is the push for education. Groups including M.A.D.D. and S.A.D.D. emerged and started educating people to the effects of drinking and driving, and providing support for people who chose not to drink and drive. At RALLY we believe that this education was a major contributor in actually reducing the number of drunk drivers, and that is why RALLY supports education.
