Pelosi: Party should heed the will of the voters
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says this about the Democratic Partyâ??s campaign for president: â??I think the tone could be improved.â??â??
Itâ??s not so much the candidates, she suggested, as the surrogates.
â??I think their people are going at each other, and I think that that's wearing out. I don't think people are interested in that,â??â?? Pelosi said on ABC This Week with George Stephanopoulos. â??But I do think that before we go to the convention, we will have a nominee. We'll go into that convention unified, we'll come out of that convention unified, and we'll be ready to win.â??â??
And, the speaker said again in an interview Friday that was aired today, the decisions of the partyâ??s â??super-delegatesâ??â?? to the Democratic National Convention should â??reflectâ??â?? which candidate has claimed the most pledged delegates in a contest which she believes will end well before the convention in Denver.
She also reiterated her view that the party may have a â??dream teamâ??â?? in November, but it will not include both Obama and Clinton on the same ticket.
â??I'm just absolutely sure. I just know it. I just know it,â??â??â?? she said. â??Iâ??ve been in politics a long timeâ?¦ and I've studied it very carefully, and I think that each one of them will make a great top of the ticket. And we will have a dream ticket, and it will contain one of them. â??â??
In the delegate chase which Obama is leading, the partyâ??s super-delegates are best-advised to follow the will of the partyâ??s voters, said Pelosi, a California Democrat.
â??If the votes of the super-delegates overturn what happened in the elections, it would be harmful to the Democratic Party,â??â?? she said. â??This is going to be over before we go to the conventionâ?¦ Pretty soon somebody will be far enough in front that this will come to an end.
What if one candidate has won the popular vote and the other claims the most delegates?
â??It's a delegate race. In other words, one wins the Electoral College and one wins the popular vote -- guess who's president of the United States. The way the system works is that the delegates choose the nominee. Most likely the scenario described will not happen.â??â??
