That's pretty messed up. I worked as a security specialist for a big chain of retail stores for several years, and I was in charge of training all the new hires. The biggest rule I made sure everyone remembered was that if the suspect was a danger to the security officer, to the patrons of the store, or to himself, then it's best to just let him/her go. There's no need for anyone to get hurt over an apprehension, especially if it was over a petty amount. Robberies, assaults, etc., are a different story. But this sounds like nothing more than minor larceny, a misdemeanor. I never liked shoplifters, obviously, and I had to be pretty forceful on a few occasions... but I knew I wasn't hurting anything other than the shoplifters pride by holding him down. Most of my apprehensions happened inside. On that hot asphalt, they should have known that they were hurting the man...

Liability lawsuits can be a real bitch, and it looks like Walmart is about to have a really BIG one on their hands.

Very true, but nevertheless, they shouldn't have killed the poor bastard. Kinda reminds me an old quote from Wayne's World: "Garth, marriage is punishment for shoplifting in some countries."

In Texas, apparently the punishment is death!

Yea am not saying it is right to shoplift but am mean cmon get serious 5 walmart emploeys pinned down a singal guy onto a very hot surface you think that is the right punishment for shoplifting? What did the emploeys get a raise for killing a shoplifter? Someone should go kick the living shit out of the 5 people that did this.

I can't attest to Walmart loss-prevention training methods, but I doubt it says anywhere in the LP training manual that employees should pin the suspect down while waiting for the police to arrive. Like I mentioned earlier, protocol for the company I worked for was to detain the subject if it was feasible to do so. Otherwise, just let the person go. Employees have no idea whether or not these shoplifters could be armed with a weapon, on drugs like PCP, or whatever. My employees weren't even allowed to carry handcuffs, so coercion was their only way. Hell, I carried handcuffs and a registered firearm, and only had to use handcuffs once... but I was trained by actual cops how to properly apprehend someone and how to defend myself against an attack with a weapon. I doubt Walmart cashiers are given this kind of training before being let loose at the notoriously dangerous cash registers.

LMAO... it sure as hell is! I didn't even noticed that, but I did wonder why I've yet to hear anything about it on the news. Thanks for pointing that out!
