A question about medical cannabis

I've wondered and I see that there's different uses for weed but what I really wanted to know is what qualify someone to be a medical marijuana patient. When I first heard about it being for medical purposes, I heard that it works in glaucoma patients and whatnot. Just a random wondering of how it worked
