Navratilova takes Czech nationality after shame over America
Martina Navratilova, the former world number one tennis star, said yesterday that she had regained her Czech nationality more than 30 years after fleeing its communist rule to live in the US.
The 51-year-old, who won the Wimbledon singles title a record nine times, said she was maintaining dual nationality and keeping her American passport. But her announcement, at a Tokyo press conference, raised questions over whether she planned to leave the US after a series of controversial attacks on President Bush and the Republican Party.
Born in Prague, Navratilova defected to the United States in 1975 aged 18, angering communist authorities who stripped her of her nationality. She was granted a green card within a month and US citizenship six years later. She became known for her unstinting opposition to communism. Navratilova said last year that while she was once ashamed about Czechoslovakia, she was now ashamed of the United States under Mr Bush. â??The thing is that we elected Bush. That is worse. Against that, nobody chose a communist government in Czechoslovakia,â? she told the Czech daily Lidove Noviny.
In 2002 she told a German newspaper: â??The most absurd part of my escape from the unjust system is that I have exchanged one system that suppresses free opinion for another. The Republicans in the US manipulate public opinion and sweep controversial issues under the table. Itâ??s depressing. Decisions in America are based solely on the question of how much money will come out of it and not on the questions of how much health, morals or environment suffer as a result.â? She was confronted with her comments in July 2002 by Connie Chung, then a CNN talk show host, who told the tennis star that when she read them, â??I wanted to say, go back to Czechoslovakia. You know, if you donâ??t like it here, this is a country that gave you so much, gave you the freedom to do what you wantâ?.

It is NOT pompous. Quit being like most of American's who pay little attention to what is really going on and think that everything they and the government does is right.
Navratilova is correct in everything she has said and she is only the 1 billioneth person to say it!
Open your eyes and put your feet on the ground.
What is wrong with the majority of the US that they won't stand up against their government even though it is being destroyed as well as our lives and our entire country. Not to mention the effect this administration and the Republicans have had since the 30's and who has done nothing short to put into place the things the way they are now.
Come on...
time to grow up and take responsibilty.

Anything she had here she earned with hard work, just like any other immigrant who flees a repressive or impoverished homeland knowing that they are going to have to bust ass to get somewhere.
She didn't come here looking for handouts or welfare- I don't think it's fair to a woman of her accomplishments to say that she's ungrateful for what was 'given' her, when, in truth, the only gift was the CHANCE to succeed away from the Communist system she despised. The rest was all her own doing.
I'm not an enormous fan of trying to combine pro sports and politics (I wish Schilling would keep his yap shut lol) as a general rule but I don't think she should be faulted for wishing to return to her homeland now that the Czech Republic is a safer and happier place.

The US is not as bad a communism, but this part is definitely true. It's all about the money, reagrdless of the other costs.

The "love or leave it" mentality of America is quite disturbing. I'm an American, and while I love the freedoms we have, I still have a lot to pick with the status quo. The fact that we can openly criticize the government and its policies (and not be jailed or executed) is amazing. However, the last seven years have been no stroll in the park for American liberties. In order to continue having these freedoms, citizens (by birth or naturalized) MUST question the judgement of any administration. The foundation of fascism has already been built in America; remember that it'll come bearing a cross.

It seems to me most everything she said is true. Bush and his cronies have definitely eroded civil liberties in this country.
