The Ideal Canadian Prime Minister?
So, I've been thinking about marijuana laws recently here in Canada, and I concluded that it's absurd that we do not legalizate and regulate cannabis, even tax it(heaven forbid)...sell it at the store, like smokes or liquor. You would make extreme profits. Eliminate those deals that soccer mom's hate in the parking lot near their kids. Eliminate insecurity among smokers..you can get high, and still participate without a huge paranoia. It would be amazing. Of course you don't get 'stoned' and go start a gang brawl...we all know that never happens. It's harmless, unless one chooses to make it harmful. Isn't that the same as alcohol and cigarettes, gambling, etc? And the money you make if you sold it in stores off taxes would be huge. Could be used in a number of areas like health care, military, anything that needs it. You could even argue that it creates jobs. People to grow. Truck it around. all the usual things products require...so it's good economically.
So, with that in mind, does anyone think if a guy ran for prime minister, and had a solid campaign and strategy in many areas(of course we don't want it solely for the weed, needs to do other good things as well)..that he could be Prime Minister. Do you think he'd win elections, get the vote on that premise to a certain degree?

Weed will never be legal big pharm companies will make sure of that, also all drug enforcement agencies dont want it legal as well as alot of cops who go around busting grow ops because heaven forbid they might have to go around and arrest some real criminals.Plus alot of cops make alot of money on the side from this war on weed..

Well first of all, the cops and drug enforcement answer to the PM, so if he put it through, they'd just have to enforce it..or quit..their choice. If they don't want to abstain from hassling people for smoking then they can find a job elsewhere.
And I don't care if they make money on the side from it being illegal..not anymore.
Pharmaceutical companies would also stand to make big profit, although I'm not sure why they would be involved anyways. We have some domination by pharmaceutical companies here but not to the degree the US does, so...I wouldn't worry about them.
Man, no wonder it isn't happening cause everyone has convinced themselves its not possible.
fuck it...im running for PM

well first off, i said the money thing cause i didn't understand how pharmaceutical companies would make sure weed was never legal..which was your point. Although you didn't articulate your thinking on why or how. I assumed you meant they'd lose money or something. In fact I don't know how pharmaceutical companies have anything to do with it.
And secondly, would it hurt us so much to say we're doing this, and we're sovereign...what are the Americans going to do...invade? You can't be serious. They "let" mexico do it..how come we can't?

Hey bro no America will not invade but they will slow down the border making Canada lose millions of $ every day they threatened the Liberal government when they were talking about decrim of MJ and the American government said they would cost us billions in lost trade if they went ahead of decrim. As far as i know weed isnt legal in Mexico. But with the Conservatives in power now their is no chance ever of it being legal.Maybe one day but not in my lifetime.

NPR: Mexican Senate Passes Drug Legalization Law
^ drugs in mexico. not 'legal' persay, however tolerated.
Plus if the border slows down it hurts America too, not just Canada.
And in case you hadn't seen, their economy is on its way to the shitter...in fact it might be closer than we think.
They need us just as much economically...and they also need all the allies they can get. If they want to give us a slap in the face cause we like to smoke pot they can get lost and find another country to play fake friends with. Let me be clear I'm talking about the government, not american people. you guys are welcome to come light up a bowl.

it can be done.
think of the money spend on prohibition. on incarcerating people. think of the lives ruined with criminal records.
think of the profits enjoyed by organized crime, and the lives lost in the underground trade. think of the enfocement offcers lives lost.
and then think how many people you dont dont smoke solely because it is illegal? probably none. meaning all of the costs i mentioned above are for nothing.
i am not convinced we need to stay on yank nuts. we got the oil, the food, the lumber, the minerals, the resources, the steel, the diamonds. we dont need to sell manufacturing to the neighbors when the whole world needs what we have. ESPESCIALLY as china and india develop a middle class, and economic sanctions from the neighbor would come from our choice to live our way.

Yeah but that doesnt change the fact we have a conservative government in office so until they are gone there will be no talk of having legal weed.
