Hello,

I have my third grow going along great, but I have one plant that couldn't handle growing rite, please take a look and tell me what you think what went wrong, pics 1 & 2 are the problem, the other is a standard plant. The problem plant has grown, but all the leaves have the mega dimples on them.

First you should fill out the problem form in the sticky at the top of this section.

Just looking at the beast, my first instinctive questions are, how hot and dry is your grow room, and how high is your pH?

But answer as many as you can for a clearer diagnosis.

Here's what I see on your plant:

1. Dimples everywhere
2. Leaf edges curled upward
3. Some leaves do not have serrated edges
4. Yellowing at the tips of some leaves and at the bottom of the plant.


As stinky said you should really fill out the troubleshooting form but here are some ideas off the top of my head.

1. PH problem. You have multiple symptoms happening that look like deficiencies or other plant issues. PH problems are known to cause multiple symptoms once it gets to the nutrient lockout zone.

2. What size pot are you in and how big is your plant? Possible it could be rootbound for all the reasons stated in #1.

3. Heat stress. This one is easy as your leaf edges are curling upwards.

4. Is/was your pot properly sterilized at the time that you transplanted into this pot or the original pot you started in? It's possible that there's something in the pot that's infecting your plant and causing this.


I'm going to go with PH or rootbound. Mostly because you said your plant is growing slowly, you have multiple symptoms, your plant is trying to conserve energy by producing more rounded leaves instead of leaves with serrated edges.

Although Heatstress could cause something similar. Burned tips, edges curled upwards, slow growth due to photosynthesis rates dropping off after 85 degrees (measured at the canopy/leaf. Laser thermometers are pretty cool if your temps look fine but symptoms indicate heat stress). Being unable to go through photosynthesis could cause some of the leaves at the bottom of your canopy to start to yellow.

I'm sticking with my first answer though. PH or rootbound.

Fill out the troubleshooting form and I'm sure all the pro's on here will come gunning to help you out. I'm merely a noob trying to get better at troubleshooting sick plants. :thumbsup:

Here is the info about my setup and this plant. This my 3rd grow , same similiar setup each time, this plant was 1 of 12 that started at the same time, all the others are tall and bushy, then there is this one

-indoor, 4x4x2 cab, lots of lights
-soil, ocean forest
-specific medium

-Anything you have added to the soil
once into flower receives moslasses
-Soil pH
N/A, haven't checked it, can't find kit
-Water source
tap, left 24 hrs
-Water pH
7.0
-Age of plant
2 months
-Type of fertilizer
none
-Rate of application

-Lighting source and distance from plant
cfls correct light spec, over 1.5 feet
-Temperature (both day and night if you are running a dark period)
temps range from 85 - 75

24 hrs for 1.5 months, 12/12 last few weeke

cab has two input fans, one exhaust blower

Just checked, plant is not rootbound, and all of the other plants I've ever done received the same temps, water, soil, lights, growth, etc. I think it was
a mutant plant, or had no tolerance for elevated PH. Don't use too much effort on this one, its on the goodbye pile as it was looking female, but then starting looking weird, thus the last straw............:jointsmile:

Well since this one is on the goodbye pile. Think you could run some water through it until you got about 2-4oz of run off water from the bottom of the pot?

Then measure the ph of the water with a ph pen or something similar?

I'm curious as to what the soil run off water ph is.

Even if you decide to ditch this plant, knowing the pH of your soil and your RH are pretty important factors... especially when trying to determine what might be causing problems like this plant has. Try to get the pH of the soil, like others have mentioned, and maybe think about picking up a decent hygrometer for your cab. Too dry or too humid air can play hell with the plants transpiration and ability to absorb and expel vital gases. I've got a digital thermometer/hygrometer that I picked up from my local hardware store, but until I got one of my own, I never realized that I was keeping the relative humidity way too low at times (10-20%). I was actually doing harm to the plants and slowing down their overall growth process.

You show temps up to 85- is that in the cab or RIGHT at the canopy? It's winter, and air is drier this time of year... you don't have a %RH reading but high temps and low humidity= trouble.
Explains the upturned edges.

Water pH 7.0. Uh oh.
Unless your soil is lower, high pH will certainly contribute to misshapen leaves. The most important pH # is that of the runoff, so check that.

Hi folks, I'll check the ph's on both before I ditch it, but the fact that 10 other plants did fine in the same timespace / experience would point to this plant as being not as hardy as the others. Sure my humidity may be off, but this plant didn't make the grade, maybe bad genetics, it was bagseed.

While I agree with what other's said, I have a feeling that if all the other plants are doing well then you just got a mutant plant.
