    stink...

Hey, I just switched my 16 widow plants to 12/12 about 3/4 days ago, and the stench is starting to get bad. I have a 177 cfm vortex blower and a can filter 33. It's growing in a walk in closet. When I walk into my apartment and down the hall near the bedroom, it smells like coffee/someone ground up sugary candy and dusted the air. I was pretty much wondering if smells like that could actually PERMEATE the floor/walls and into the apartments adjacent to my own. Or if it'd like, have to make its way out the door/window. And do you have any suggestions on where to place the blower/filter? As of now I have it inside my grow room, near the door I made with panda/tarp zip. Is it better outside, or deeper in? Thanks

I'm a newbie but maybe I can help. You say you have an exhaust fan and a carbon filter, right?
Maybe your filter is too old and not working properly or,
Maybe your closet isn't well sealed, or the fan to filter connection is leaking. Tent-type enclosures (especially home made) tend to not keep odors inside as well.
You need to install the filter fan in the room and exhaust it out, with no other way for air to get out.(except small air intake(s) ) Just placing the filter in the room might cut down a little, but then that clean air just goes by the plants and absorbs more odors...it's a viscious cycle.
Also, If you are not running the fan, like if it cycles or goes off at night, and the closet is opened and/or leaks when shut, then you now have an odor problem.
Trace these leaks and fix them, if you can't cut thru the current door, buy another unfinished, cut it, hang it, then re-install the old door when you're thru! I couldn't imagine growing in an apartment.....I'd be WAY too paranoid! :stoned:

wow, 16 plants in an apt is quite gutsy.

And yes, smells permeate sealed zip lock bags, so cheap drywall combined with 16 of them?

Maybe someone can take a few off your hands?

My can filter was just purchased, brand new. I could exhaust it out of my air tight panda film barrier, but I'd still have my other exhaust which is sucking air off my fan, pumping stink out. I have quite the vacuum in my room with the one forced exhaust and passive intake, I'd imagine that would increase alot with two exhausts. Also, in my grow room is a small crawl space to my bathroom, wouldn't I smell it permeate through that/my panda film and door before they got it through the walls? The only time it does stink is when the door is open, not when I have it shut and can running inside. Meh, and absolutely no signs of bud yet. The smell is so wonderful though.

Why 2 exhausts? The carbon filter is supposed to go on your exhaust, which should be your only exhaust. It goes...Filter------>Fan----->outside room. No air that has not been thru the carbon should be allowed to leave the room. I only have 1 exhaust, a 172 cfm fan and a home-made carbon filter and that works fine....(with cfls, I have a 400 watt air cooled hps for my soon to be used flower room!!) You don't need an axhaust AND a filter, the filter is for the exhaust. the idea is to scrub the air as it leaves. I vent my air right outside and the front porch it vents under is odor-free. I know I'm not in flower yet, but they do stink pretty good..(before I hooked up the carbon filter, I smelled it 2 rooms away!!) I can't really picture your setup. You have an enclosure of panda film in the closet? Just use the fan and filter combo as the exhaust, you don't need another!!! Hope this helps.

Oh and didn't you say that it stank in the hallway? Did you mean just the smells that leave when you go in there? Oh, well I guess open a window and use air freshner! I actually have my cabs in a room that is dedicated to the cause, so I'm also gonna carbon scrub that room when I am harvesting and working in there with the cab door open.

Nah, it stank through my panda. I just had the carbon filter in there, scrubbing the air and pumping it back into the grow. I now have my filter/vortex blowing air through the hood, and that air going out the other end and out of my panda. Absolutely no smell until you go in there. Keeps it cooler, also. But now I have an extra inline fan. I'm sure it will come in handy this summer, though :/

    Wish me luck
