Do some plant types normally display a purple stem, or is your plant stressed in some way and is trying to tell you something? In my experience, a purple stem tells me I need to fix something with the grow so the plant is happier.

Can be caused by strains genetics, temps and nute problems.
There's loads of 'purple' strains. (I grow Potent Purple, myself)
Have heard of others putting their late-stage flowering 'purple' plants in front of the a/c to deepen the colors. Since wife and I are the only consumer of the end product, and I've heard it doesn't increase potency, I haven't tried. (but I will try it eventually lol)

For me it indicates a nutrient imbalance. I've had this occur before but I didn't notice a diff. in yield. I've also grown some Afghani that produced purple buds in about 20% of the plants. Of course this had nothing to do with the veins, but thought I'd throw it in here.
