    Ok, I got this seed

Basically I discovered an old seed I had stored in my dresser that I found a while back in a really sticky sack. My question is, how long should I try on germinating this seed before I give up? I mean its a perfectly healthy looking seed and by that I mean it gives me no reason to believe that it shouldn't germinate. I have it sitting in a wet paper towel on top of a warm surface so how long should I keep trying before its probably safe to determine its not gonna pop at all? And what else can i do to influence it? I heard about scraping it with a nail file can help it break through easier

Give it a couple weeks. Not too warm, either. Too warm, and you are at risk of fungus.
You probably don't need to scrape it but if you want to, just scuffing the sharper edge of the seed slightly is all it takes.

I wouldn't even bother putting it anywhere warm. As long as your temps are above 70 degrees in your house then you should get a strong root emerging.

I found in the many seedlings that I killed in attempt to perfect germination that just placing them in a zip lock back in a paper towel folded over on top of itself, trapping as much air in the bag as possible and then throwing it in a dark kitchen cabinet for 1-7 days would give me just about 100% germination rate with a very strong starting root.

The times I tried placing them on something warm or on a germination pad it resulted in my seeds roots turning into this disgusting mush type substance.

Presoak the seed in a cup of water for 24 hours or until it sinks into the bottom of the cup. Which ever comes first then try that zip lock bag method.

you could try putting it in vermiculite, that's tons of oxygen with great water retention
the relative humidity would be literally 100% im sure and it'd still be in air
but hey, im a noob, i could be wrong

behind your xbox? for the warmth or to hide it? cuz it wont hide very well when its 2ft tall in a month or 2....

i hate using the towel methods and related garbage. my method:

    1) soak for 2-5 hours in un-chlorinated water
    2) plant just like you would with any other seed in nature.
    3) expect to see a sprout in 6-10 days, but it can take even longer sometimes

no, i have a dedicated grow room I was just using it for the heat. I have some plants but I just found this seed today in my dresser so I wanted to see if it would grow. I'm soaking it in water I put in a gladware container, does it need to be aerated?

not really. Just leave the lid off. Once it sinks to the bottom then it's ready to be put into soil or paper towel. I like the paper towel method just because after I put the pots under lights I won't sit there wondering if that one seed is ever going to sprout.

this way you can select the biggest seeds with the strongest root If space is precious to you.

Some peope have problems though with the root getting stuck to the paper towel. I've never had that problem. I use Paper Towels made by Kleenex.

Either way you go I'm sure the seed will sprout.

Would it irritate you if someone called your method "garbage"? You seem to be getting a little brash in some of your more recent posts, maybe you ought to tame that ego a little bit. You're entitled to your opinion, but you're not entitled to bash anyone else's opinion just because you don't like it.

The paper towel method works very well, and it's generally grower error and rough handling that causes it to be ineffective. Unless the seeds are duds, I have almost 100% success with it and usually have them planted and growing within days. It's not rocket science.
