"CFLs Don't Grow Plants" and other such adeventures

    at the hydro shop.

It was quite a journey. Was kinda high and missed the exit on the highway, more than once.

Anyway, the hydro shop was kinda ghetto, but amazing nonetheless as it was my first time.

The guy at the shop got in an argument with me, swearing that vinegar is highly alkaline and they use it to raise Ph. I cited the vinegar baking soda experiment, and he got mad at me and said "O, so you know more than me OKAY."

Then he was kinda a jerk the rest of the time I was there.

O yea, and he told me that CFLs don't grow plants.

I ended up skipping the $23 bag of Fox Farm soil and just opted for some ph up and down and a liquid test kit.

Using the Ph tester I bought from his store, vinegar tested around 4.0

Perhaps lower, but the color chart only goes to 4.0

I wanted to call the damn store and tell them about the vinegar, but fuck it, he already hates me and I have to return soon for Ocean Forest.

Also, apparently vermiculite contains asbetos and causes cancer. And apparently perlite is way better anyway.

And I have about 50% vermiculite currently.

    damn. peace

Perlite often times sends airborne particulates right into your face, too... which I'm sure isn't healthy by any standards. Any time I mix soil, I always wear a dust mask. The cheap, disposable ones you can buy at the grocery store. I also like to add blood/bone/kelp meal to my soil, and stirring everything up can cause a nasty, multicolored dust storm to blow up right in your face.

If you want to continue adding vermiculite to your mix, just wet it first before handling it. Same with perlite. This tends to drag all the minute particles to the bottom, leaving you with MUCH less dust.

...and, agreed. It doesn't sound like that shop owner will be in business for much longer. It might do him some good to actually read up on the products that he's selling. It would make him look much less like a total ass.

    Take care.

The shop was pretty amazing looking, complete with plants in hydro systems in the store, aeroponic cloners, full hydro huts, ozone generators, you name it.

Said he has been there 5 years. Thing is, he is the only hydro shop within 50 miles. Probably much further than that, I would say a cicular area with a diameter of 100 miles.

I have to go back for Fox Farm. Will definitely go perlite rather than verm on this one.

Thanks for the wetting tip, Clan.

He might of just got alkaline/acid mixed up, as stupid as that is. I just don't know how you can do that when you own a hydroponics shop.

Should of just told him to taste the damn vinegar. Alkalines are bitter and acids are sour. Derrrrr.

He also probably wouldn't want any of his customers buying CFLs when he could instead push a pricey HPS onto them.

Decent. Bailed on IL after I took my last crop down. Had a few scares at the location where I was doing a "commercial" type grow and decided to just pull out of it after the last harvest. Should'a got in touch with you, I had a lot to sell during the holidays. No doubt there should still be a lot of it in the Rockford area.

My microgrow CFL type stuff is still doing good, though. I check these boards about twice a day, but don't really read anything but the grow area so I'm not really that active on here.

Don't wanna derail this guy's thread too harshly. Hope all is good with you.
