Nature isn't perfect. The reason we grow indoors is so we can eliminate the variables, all the research suggests that total darkness is optimal. Now thats not to say that you cant have a decent harvest it just means that you aren't creating the absolute best conditions.
Personally I continue reducing the light time during flowering 15 min/week until I reach 10 hours, because in nature the days continue to grow shorter even after it reaches the magic 12 hour cycle, even though the research doesn't support this. Intellectually I know its wrong but it just seems to work for me.
