Slowly and stressfully would be my guess. Especially if it were a hollow-stemmed strain you were using.
Theoretically it sounds possible, but not sure if at all practical. Spending all that effort, and the extra healing time for a possibly pointless and fruitless endeavour.
There is one way to find out, tho...give it a go.

Half of it grows oranges and half of it grows grapefruit. He uses a technique called grafting where he chops half the tree off then take branches from a grapefruit tree. He then scrapes away the outer bark on each the branch and the spot on the trunk where he wishes to place it, leaving the green underbark (forgot what he called it) and tapes the branches in place.
