Arizona Sen. John McCain got a Valentine's Day gift today when his former rival Mitt Romney threw his support to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts who dropped out of the race last week after stinging defeats in the often-acrimonious Feb. 5 primaries, announced his endorsement this afternoon in Boston.

"Things can get pretty rough in a political campaign," he said.

"Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent," Romney said.

"Primaries are tough; now we move forward," McCain said, standing next to Romney, an American flag in the background.

"I am very honored to have Gov. Romney and the members of his team," McCain said during a televised news conference.
