1 joint is equivalent to 20 cigarettes.

Fox news posted a story today about marijuana being much more harmful than cigarettes...personally, I find it hard to believe. Here is the story. Any thoughts/comments would be great.

Smoking marijuana is far more dangerous than smoking cigarettes, according to a group of scientists in New Zealand.

The researchers found that smoking one joint is equivalent to 20 cigarettes in terms of lung cancer.

While studies in the past have shown that marijuana can cause cancer, few have actually established a strong link between marijuana use and the actual incidence of lung cancer.

For the study, researchers interviewed 79 lung cancer patients in an effort identify the main risk factors for the disease, such as smoking, family history and occupation. The patients were questioned about alcohol and marijuana consumption.

In the high-exposure group, lung cancer risk rose by 5.7 times for patients who smoked more than a joint a day for 10 years, or two joints a day for 5 years, after adjusting for other variables, including cigarette smoking.

"Cannabis smokers end up with five times more carbon monoxide in their bloodstream (than tobacco smokers)," team leader Richard Beasley, at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand, said in a news release.

The scientists also noted that marijuana could be expected to harm the airways more than tobacco since its smoke contained twice the level of carcinogens, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, compared with tobacco cigarettes.

"There are higher concentrations of carcinogens in cannabis smoke...what is intriguing to us is there is so little work done on cannabis when there is so much done on tobacco,? said Beasley.

"In the near future we may see an 'epidemic' of lung cancers connected with this new carcinogen. And the future risk probably applies to many other countries, where increasing use of cannabis among young adults and adolescents is becoming a major public health problem,? he added.

Find me one person that got lung cancer from just smoking weed. It has anti-cancer causing properties anyway. Have you ever met an old stoner that looked anything like an old cig smoker? If someone smokes tobacco for 40 years, they just look old, haggard, wrinkly and nasty.

If it is a concern, then just eat that shit, or vape it. You can't eat tobacco!!!

As if cannabis is just becoming popular, if anything the generation that should have been a cancer epidemic would have been the sixties.

Three studies should be enough, but there are more in the link below. I've been toking 40 years- the main problem was that my lungs didn't like the smoke. It took less than 2 weeks to clear up 40 years of "smoke abuse". Vaping is the way to go!- Granny:hippy:

Fox news is also a media controlled biased Republican piece of shit. I just consider it a subsidiary of the Federal government, an outlet for them to spew shit they want you to hear and let their own agendas be played out.

I thought the exact same thing. Something with the cannabis had to have been altered to create these results. I am 100 percent sure that this is all propaganda to turn the public view against the use of cannabis. Cannabis has really never done anything to my lungs in this past year of smoking, although I do have bronchitis now, I don't believe it happened because of smoking it. Cannabis actually makes me STOP coughing and takes away the pain I experience from it. Supposedly though it will make it worse by irritating my lungs...how ironic.

...despite potentially higher levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons found in cannabis smoke compared to tobacco smoke (dependent on what part of the plant is smoked), the THC present in cannabis smoke should exert a protective effect against pro-carcinogens that require activation. In contrast, nicotine activates some CYP1A1 activities, thus potentially increasing the carcinogenic effects of tobacco smoke-
Cannabis and tobacco smoke are not equally carcinogenic
    ^^^Thanks, Granny!^^^

I remember that most of cannabis' carcinogens are NOT in the smoke-able part (the bud). Notice the parenthesis in the first sentence (of the quote, above).
