That's from a year ago and near my city. The city did everything they could for these people and the homeless really refused to be reasonable. I can't remember all the details but the city wanted them to move a few blocks away. They slashed the tents because they kept setting up their tents in really a dangerous area, right under the off ramp to one of the interstate exits. I also believe it is in a high crime rate area and the homeless were smoking and lighting fires near these very flamable tents. I think they ended up giving them new flame resistant tents if they moved to the alternate location. Also, when I say the homeless people were unreasonable, they were dead set on being homeless and didn't care. They literally called it tent city and had a mayor and other elected officials for their tent city. Many programs were put into place to help thouse who were serious if they wanted to get off the streets and return to society but hardly any took advantage of the programs. Basically, they could be moved into low rent housing with the first 3-4 months rent and bill free and they would get job assistance. These programs were not just being run by the city but through churches and charity. So although I'm not sure I would slash a homeless person's tent, it's not accurate to judge what all had gone on leading up to that video and what followed.

I was a homeless person here in California for 7 years.
It was my choice to stay homeless, I had opportunity after opportunity to get a job and a place to live but, I chose to stay on the streets because I was a drug addict.
No-one and nothing could make me change my mind on the whole thing but me.
In 2000 I got tired of that life and cleaned up my act.
Now I live in Studio City where my rent is $1100.00 a month that I pay with a check every month.
My job is easy, I build motorcycles and take care of my wife.
Life is good off the streets!!!

It seems really screwed up at first sight, but as FBR and others mentioned, you can't judge it unless you know what went on before. We've had homeless people insist on living under overpasses and other areas near where I live too. They will not take advantage of alternatives that are offered to them. While they stay there, they create a number of different hazards --- fires, human waste, crime and litter. I do not like to see it happen, but if they won't clear out on their own when given the opportunity, I think they do need to be forcibly removed. It sucks.
It seems like there are three classes of homeless.
There are the people who want a normal life and hate being on the streets, but some kind of financial or personal disaster has knocked them out of their homes, and they find it difficult to get back on their feet. Those kind take advantage of opportunities and eventually find their way off the streets.
Then there are those that have severe drug or alcohol problems or have mental health problems. They need treatment and often are resistant to recieving it. It's nearly impossible to force someone into rehab or into a mental institution, so they live on the streets until they die or get treatment.
And there also seem to be some who just like the life on the streets. They seem like they could get jobs and get homes, but they just opt out. They are often the ones who seem to militantly agitate for their "right" to live wherever and however they want, even if it creates a hazard for others and for themselves.More of the same: Renger\'s Rantings
