cutting metal with dremel power tool?

    Hey,

I need to cut some metal tubes, just wondered if anyone knew what the dremel power tool's metal cutting capabilies are like?

    Sorry 'bout the randomness.

    Ta. :rasta:

EDIT - probably 3 MM tube walls.

It would depend greatly on the type of tubing (thickness and material) and the discs you use , I have found the Dremel to be very useful for the normal type of thin mild steel pipes that are common in most bongs. Aluminium is even easier of course.

You'll need the right attachment, which is a disc holder and a cutting disc appropriate to the type of metal to be cut. You will also need to clamp down the metal.
A hack-saw is a better tool for the job, or better still, a tube cutter.
Don't forget to wear glasses- metal shards get EVERYWHERE with a power cutting tool of any type.

I've used it to cut through an exhaust pipe on a car. I did go through some disks but it does work in a pinch.

Wow thanx for the swift replys. I will be using a hacksaw to cut to length, but I need to cut some intriquate notches so I think I'll have to buy a dremel and hopefully it'll do the job. :rasta:

use a hand saw it would be easier, though if you must use the dremel, then i would suggest getting the correct cutting disc for the type of pipe your trying to cut, the cutting drill bit warps the metal sometimes.

Do you have a power drill already? You can use a cutting disk for metal on a normal drill, its just harder to regulate speed on a normal drill versus a dremel.

Dude... stoners are WHIZZES with Dremel tools, no pun intended. Creativity + need for custom smoking devices = eventually we will all run out and buy one.
I have two. Cordless and corded. The cordless one sucks sweaty goat sack. Get the plug-in one.

i dont think ive ever heard that combination of words combined before, I must say that it sounds beautiful together.

and i too wouldnt suggest the cordless one, you get more raw power from the raw power of power outlets, not sissy batteries.

i have a real nice air powered grinder/cut off tool... but i still use a damn hack saw... probbably due to the fact that... the last thing i cut was only about one inch by one inch by half a inch... and something spining as fast as the damn air tool... is not a very bright idea to hold the metal in your hand... LOL....
