Drilling a hole in a glass bottle?

I remember seeing that someone made a bong out of a beer bottle on here once. I was wondering is there a speacial drill bit that would be needed to drill a hole through the glass of a beer bottle?

Yes, there is a special drill piece you need to drill into glass, but I couldn't say what it is. For some reason I'm thinking crystal though.

The bit that Dremel markets as 'tile and masonry' which is a sharply-knurled carbide rod is ideal for drilling glass. The 'glass' bits are more for engraving.
You must fill the bottle with water and sink it up to the level of the hole in another bucket of water as you drill, to do 3 things: Cool the glass (cracking), cool the bit (dulling), and damping the vibrations (cracking). Use a plug-in type dremel tool as the battery ones don't get up enough speed to do the job fast.

in college I drilled several bottles and glass items. I was using a rock / masonry bit that I was using to drill rocks at the time. This worked quite well, the only issue being at the final cut through, these are rough bits and they would try to rip the last chuck out and this sometimes killed the bottle. If a larger bit is used & you'll need a file in order to get the downstem to go the correct direction

Oh, BTW, smoking out of bottles generally sucked, I'd make aa hooka out of the bottle, it'd work better. good luck!

I gave up drilling glass and figured out how to drill cork stoppers, then made some killer waterpipes :thumbsup:

I used to drill aquariums by getting clay, making a little levee all the way around the intended drilling spot, fill it with water, and then drill using a tile bit. You guys got me pumped, I think I might start making some new bongs!

I use a carbide glass/tile drill bit, it drills pretty fast. If you get one, be sure you keep spraying water or have lube so you don't chip the glass. :thumbsup:

Spot on, filling with wet sand is good to dampen vibrations as well, it's sometimes easier than working in water, another good tip is to put a bit of tape, most kinds will suffice, onto where you are drilling this will stop the drill bit sliding or skiting about the glass when you start drilling. This is a good tip for drilling tiles or any smooth ceramics not just glass.
Remember safety glasses, you have only one pair of eyes.
