i lost a dollar

2 buddies and I walked into a headshop.
Each of us had ten dollars to spend.
We decided to pool our money and get the thirty dollar bubbler.

On the way out to the car the clerk stopped us and informed us we should have gotten a medicanl MJ discount.
He gave us three dollars
( should have given us five but swiped two to split it evenly between us).

I get home and my ol lady wants to know how much we spent. So we got three dollars back=twenty seven right?
So we each spent nine and everyone knows nine times three is twenty seven, and the two the clerk took would equal twenty nine dollars.

Where did the missin dollar go?

There's no missing dollar, just a clerk who ripped you off.
20% of $30 is $6, not $5.
He ripped you for $3 not $2.

15% would only be $4.50
17.5% would be $5.25
In order to get close to a $5.00 discount, the percentage would be 16.666%
Nobody gives a 16.666% discount.
