Rove sees ways to beat Clinton or Obama

WASHINGTON --Republican strategist Karl Rove laid out a line of attack Wednesday that he said could defeat either of the two Democratic front-runners for president. Speaking at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting, Rove said Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton could be taken to task for proposing a "big government" health care system and $800 million in new spending despite claims to "fiscal responsibility."

The former White House adviser said Clinton also "has a problem giving straight answers" and cited her inconclusive response when asked in a debate last month whether she favored driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

Taking aim at the other Democratic front-runner, Rove said Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is vulnerable to "questions about his accomplishments" as a first-term senator and "whether he has the experience that would equip him to be commander in chief in a time of war."

In an apparent acknowledgment of the uphill challenge facing the Republicans this year, Rove said the party's nominee has "big tasks to undertake." He said the path to victory would include stressing "kitchen table issues" such as health care, the economy and trade.

I recall quite a while back in here people talking of the next Dem. President........seems all the talk now is about Ron Paul and NOTHING positive about either Hillary or Obama. They both look beatable and with a portion of the independent vote (Ron Paul people) not voting; looks all that much better for the GOP.

i think that no matter wich person wins be it hilary obama huckabee mit mccain or paul we are screwed. none of the canidates are worth a crap. they are after all politicians and in my experience all politicains be they repubs or dems are only out for their own intrests and dont give a crap abut the american people.

At this point it is way to early to tell what will happen in November, but I think things still lean in the Dems favor. On the Republican side you have a pack of candidates with no real front runner, and any one of them could get the nomination, but none of them appeal accross the board to all Republicans. On the Democratic side, you have two front runners, either one of which is likely to be energizing to the party. Many primary results show a lot more Dems turning out than Republicans, which I think points to a more energized party on the Democratic side.

I also think the big government and fiscal responsibility lines of attack are not going to work for Republicans at all. It's been a Republican president and a Republican congress that have expanded the government and expanded the deficit and debt these past 8 years.

I had to leave and didn't finish my earlier post. The other thing working against the Republicans is that the economy is starting to slide. If problems continue for the rest of the year, the country will lean toward the Democrats.

I think people do look back at the previous Clinton years as a good time economically that hasn't been matched for the last eight. Good jobs, good money, good stock market, balanced budget, budget SURPLUS! Hillary can't make any kind of legitimate claim on those good times, but people might still go her way if they think there is any chance she can bring that back.

I also think people are weary of the division in this country, and I think Obama could appeal to a lot of people in both parties as sa person who might be able to unite our country again.

I don't see any of the Republicans having those kind of factors in their favor. And none of them will have broad support across their own party, let alone across the whole country.

Hillary is far from being a loved individual anyways and I don't think Obama really has a chance for the nomination. Between her changing views every other day and good ol' Bill blasting anyone that speaks out against her....she isn't going to be the popular, or even "least hated" candidate when elections come.

In the last debate they killed themselves regarding the war issue. They all state on pulling out the troops ASAP but NOW state that there will be a skeleton force to gaurd the Embassy and civilian workers? Someone like McCain will bring up the kidnapping issue of our troops on that assnine policy.

Mark my words....there'll be a Republican President elected again.

Obama has a lot of bagage too. This is the first year I've ever seen the presidential race so wide open. Except for 3rd party candidates of course.

I still feel it leans toward the Dems at this point, but there is a long time to go still, and anything can happen between now and next November.

You're right about Hillary being disliked --- I personally have a visceral dislike for her, and I can't even identify why exactly.

I'm not sure if I agree about Obama. I think he has a decent shot still.

But I also think that the entire Democratic party will rally behind either one of those two. I'm not so sure the entire Republican party will rally behind their eventual candidate. Any one of them might still win the nomination at this point, but none of them have broad support in their own party.

You are right about the Dems on the war. But the wierd thing right now is that the war almost seems to be fading as an issue. Dems don't bring it up as much, because is seems like the tide is finally turning, and GOP doesn't bring it up, becasue it has been so unpopular and they're still not sure how it will turn out. At this point no one wants to bring it up and they all want to wait and see. We have a year to go to see how the war procedes and how it will affect the general election.

im not sure wich way im goin this time around. but it will more than likly be dem. i say this because john mcain is the only republican that just dont scare the livin crap outa me. i usually vote for a 3rd party but this time around i gotta do what i can to keep mit, rudi or huckabee out. i mean come mit is so outa touch with reality it aint funny he is like ward cleaver. rudi well hes as 2 faced as they come, if you dont think so look at what he said about gay marrige. first he says he thinks gays should be able to marry then not 5 min later states he would support a constitutional ban on it. huckabee, well old time religion should not influence our constitution. the only hting i really dont agree with mccain on is his stance on the almighty herb.

as far as dems go well hillary does have more experience in politics than the rest. shes been into it longer than shes been married to bill. so its more than just bein first ladie. obama well i just cant say why but i dont trust him. edwards well .... i actually did want to see gravel in there somewhere but he kinda petered out.

oh i forgot thompson i think he could do a hell of a job if it were a screen play

but now that i think on it somemore i will provably just vote as normal because i dont know if i could live with myself votin for any of these losers especially hillary

as far as them bringin up the subject of the war well thats because its actually startin to turn in our favor. the dems cant get the anti war vote if were winning and since the press is so biased against the bush admin well of course they aint goin to report it. hell even fox news aint said nothin about it in a long time.
