too much nitrogen?
I wouldn't use Epsom Salts to try and affect the pH, either. I've only ever used it to treat for Magnesium deficiencies, and I can't think of any other reason to use it. You'd have to use a ton of it in order for it to have much of an effect on the pH of the soil.
If you can't get your hands on pH Up/Down, you can add dolomite lime to raise the pH, or garden sulfur to lower it.
