I have 2 cats, sooty and sweep, brother and sister, both black moggies, love them, i dont know how they'd feel about another cat coming into their territory being as their brother and sister (family).

Whats it like for the new recruit?

Oh definitely. Love my cats. Always have always will.

And I should've made myself more clear. my third cat isn't at the same house as my other two. He's the lone cat at my other house. I doubt my older cats would appreciate bringing another cat into their territory. My mom got a a dog about a year ago, and they don't like him. At all. He chases them all the time and it pisses me off. He's a puppy, I know, but I feel bad for my cats because they all always have to be on the lookout. :\ They're fine though. When our dog goes off to bed they're on the prowl. They're so funny at night :stoned:

I love cats and dogs, but I don't have either right now. There is a neighbor cat though that thinks it wants to be my cat. He hangs out in my yard all day, and whenever I open the door, he is right there trying to get into the house. He's not a stray --- he has a colar, and a little bell, and a name tag with an address, and he gets brushed out farily often by someone.

On the subject of cats and dogs being left alone. A cat can be a very solitary animal and can be left alone all day with no problem at all. Some cats can get bored and do somthing like unspool an entire roll of toilet paper, and then shred it all over your house, but that's about it. Dogs are social animals and need to feel like they are part of a "pack" in order to have proper mental health. Some dogs can deal with being alone for a day, but others feel too disconnected from the "pack." They feel like they have been ostracised for some reason and they get neurotic. They do things like howling, whining, chewing on furntiture, digging up yards, and eating up expensive irrigation systems. Not all dogs get neurotic on thier own, but some do. If you are going to adopt a grown dog, explain the daily routine to the place you are going to get the dog and ask about whether the dog will be OK on it's own all day. Tell them you can't have one that will go crazy. They may have one they know is OK.
