Those precious creatures.
I'm talking about my cat of course. She's comfortably found herself nestled inside of my sleeping blanket, not even the shine of light can reach her in there. She's won my heart with barely any effort. I guess I'm a sucker for cute behavior?

Nonsense! A dog can virtually take care of itself, and it's independent upbringing might even make one hell of a guard-dog. Maybe you'd benefit more by adopting a pet? I can give you two great reasons why that wouldn't be a bad idea, even for one who might be away from home for awhile.
First, it would be a great relief to your local animal shelter who probably has more pets than it can afford to feed. Plus, it means that one less animal has to undergo euthanization as many shelters do not have the luxury of putting a "non-kill shelter" sign outside their establishment.
The second reason why adopting a dog might be the best route for you is that you wont have to worry that your cute little puppy isn't getting enough affection...I know first-hand that a cold upbringing can cause serious detriment to a dog's self-esteem and yes such concepts exist in animals too.

It would be OK and happy! Just so long as you ensure it has the provisionals it would need to survive, maybe even a doghouse to shelter one's beloved pet from the elements? Unless I'm forgetting something?

dogs are not independant the way cats are, a cat can feed it self, go out and come back all on its own with no need to worry. However you leave a dog at home for most of the day its going to feel neglected (barking, crying), how will it go for a walk? will he/she walk itself and i suppose it buys a mcdonalds and its sweet as a nut.
I think anyone who leaves their dog alone during the day with no-one even cheking on him/her is not looking after their animal properly and should be reported so the dog goes to a better home, a dog needs constant attention. I have 2 cats they do what they want to do - i just fill up there bowls (not weed) and stroke em once in a while but they get on with it.

If I left my dog home, all it would do is sit in the window and wait.
My cats have other lives that they don't speak of. I don't even let them outside. Yesterday, I found them plotting something.
Uh-oh. My big cat is staring at my lower, right leg.

My next door neighbour left her dog at home all day every day while she was working. The dog cried and cried and cried until my dad had to speak to her (they got on well) she decided to give up the dog she had problems (going through a divorce) no-one to look after the dog. She gave the dog up dont know where, but hopefully to a better home.

I can only suggest these things with knowledge for the best possible circumstance, smokestoomuch. Ultimately it boils down to the owner's personal circumstance, which is far from what I know. However, if beginnerbuddah is willing to dedicate an hour or so in the morning to ensuring that her pet was thoroughly walked before leaving to work those five days out of the week, then I don't see the big problem. Yes cats are more independent in the sense that they are in indoors with a litter box to tinkle in and a bowl for feeding/drinking-they can pretty much take care of themselves. However, a dog does require more attention, they are basically creatures of habit and getting them on a reasonable and maintainable schedule like walking them each morning, can do wonders for their behavior. It's only a matter of training them.
