Bushy plants can be caused by nutrients, light all around the sides, strain, pruning and other stuff. In general Indicas are more bushy and shorter than Sativas. If you prune at all, plants will be shorter and bushier. You can always make a vertical screen and try to train the stems to grow straight up instead of out. There are also nutrients that inhibit vertical growth and others that promote it.
