Actually the largest is the aorta. Blood flows to the lower limbs via the aorta then common iliac then that splits to the internal and external iliac then external iliac becomes the femoral artery once it passes the inguinal ligament (which is found basically in that crease of the top of the thigh and bottom of the pelvis).

Cut just about any artery in the body and you will have problems because arteries have higher pressures compared to veins and every time the heart beats out comes gushing blood.
