ALL CFL- RUBBERMAID GROW
All right, somedreamndigital, I have a concern for you. You have a nice looking rubbermaid grow box there. Very nice indeed. My concern is at your tiny fan on the top. Ventilation is very important and helps with tons of things.
Now, could that little fan you got there suffice? MAYBE, but it sure as hell would be a horrible thing to find out half way in that it is not and have to deal with it when you have plants in there. I have a little grow going as well, but I made sure I had good ventilation before I started. Here's my pic. Put a thermometer or something in there, let the box run for 8 or so hours (could be excessive lol just making sure it heats up) and see what the temp is.
Just think about it!!!!

Thank You Balkey.... Yea, I already kinda knew this one small ass fan wouldnt be enough. Dammit. So, I guess I need to go bigger. Or what if I installed one more of these little fans.
Also, I was thinking. What if I put this out in my garage? See, Im in Wisconsin and right now it's winter for us. By doing that I wonder if the cooler air from the garage and this tiny ass fan would be enough to cool me down until I get a larger fan???
I thank you for your comments too. That's tight. Let me know what you think:thumbsup::jointsmile:

I think you should cut a bigger hole, and go for a bigger fan, maybe at least double that size. Mine are 7inchers, and I have 2 of them, but my tub is also something like 54 gal.
Well, considering your in the north and its winter, using that little fan and placing it in the garage should be fine. But if you want that thing to be long term without you altering it anymore then do it right the first time ya know. That's my two cents.
I do think that fan won't be enough though. Seriously though, get a thermometer, let your box run for a while, hours, and then see how hot it is in there. Should give you a good idea of the temperature difference from room temp. to your grow box temp. I can keep my box temp. only 2 degrees warmer than room temperature. :stoned::stoned:

What do you do when it's time to water? You always have to unscrew those screws?

Well, from what I see it's just a threaded bolt. So if he DID have to unscrew them every time, there's an easy fix. Simply, drill the hole SLIGHTLY bigger, so that the screw loosely slides in, instead of screwing in. It should still do it's purpose of holding the top and bottom tubs together.

actually its the fan itself that looks questionable, not necessarily the size of the hole. I bought one of those crappy fans and it didn't last until morning even. I like the honeywell fans, also the PC fans that they sell at Radioshack 5" square manage to move a fair amount of air around. The rubbermaid is a great place to start, but keep in mind that if you don't train your plants fairly early that you'll run out of space before the end of the process.....

yes somedream just keep trouble shooting, probably a bigger fan, what CFM is the current one rated. if you can i would move it to your garage, lower temps encourage females. Just do trial and error without paying attention to how much you spend.

 Thank You Balkey - I do have a thermo in there. It's one of those cheap digital ones. I did those "test runs" last night. First in the basement and one run in the garage. The basement temp reading was 71 degrees, the box gave me readings of 81-84 degrees after running it for only 3 hours. I moved it out to the garage where the temps were 30-37 degrees and the box temp dropped to 60-64 degrees and that was after running it for 4 hours there. For security reason, I think I may just go ahead, cut the bigger hole, get rid of that shit fan, replace with a 7incher like you did and go with that. My goal is to simply have the box done and ready before my little chicks start to show up. Thank You Balkey. You ROck!!!
Hey Smoke!!Nice to meet ya. Balkey was correct. I have some threaded bolts with holes slightly larger so that I can simply pop them out to remove the top.
12345 -whats up. Yea this fan is pretty shitty. But unlike the one you had Ive had this one for almost 7 months or so. I was using it for a little desktop fan and ran it all the time. But I always took it apart to clean it. And you bring a good point; Pc Fans. I have a shit load of them. I may go ahead and add a few just to "push" air in and one to help my shitty one. Good point, thank you. How early do you suggest starting lst? Thanks for your input.
BODEM!!!! Hey Whats up!!!!! you rock! anyways.. I don't know the cfm rating on that fan, however I will be taking 121345 and Bakeys advice and making some changes. I will post the pix tonight after they are done. Let me ask you BODEM, when do you suggest starting lst?
Thank you all for your support. This site and you guys rock!!! Ill be posting more pics soon.

OK guys, Well I still can't seem to locate the the paper clip to attach pics so I will post direct links once again to the site so you can view my pics.
Anyways, I have recieved a lot of bad ass suggestions about tweaking my rubbermaid so that it will perform at it's best. One of my main concerns was temps. I have just added 2 pc fans for help with cooling.http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...l/100_5666.jpg
Now what I wish to accomplish here is simple. I want to continue using my small desktop fan on top of the lighting to pull heat out of the box and bring in cooler air. I also want to install the pc fans on each side of the box where the lighting support is. I installed a fan blowing in and one blowing out. They are positioned so that the fan bringing in cooler air is blowing it across the lights. The fan on the opposite side is pulling it out along with the small desktop fan on top.
In theory, (well, mine at least) This will keep my cfl's a lot cooler therefore reducing heat inside of the box.
I ran one more test run last night for 3 hours and it dropped temps in the box dramatically! Why am I so excited?! I removed one of the 26 watters and replaced it with a 42 watter and im still running low temps. Keep in mind tho, im only testing the box over a 3 hour time frame. When I place my ladies in their home the box will be pumping 24/24 untill the veg cycle. What do you guys think about that?
Moving ahead tho, I will be placing the girls in tonight and I will begin posting the actual growing instead of all this chatter about the construction of the box. Im looking for feedback, critisim anything you can think of that im not doing or what ever let me know.:jointsmile::jointsmile::jointsmi le::jointsmile::jointsmile::rasta:
This pic is the complete installation of the fans.
