Indoors, aim for bushy over tall.
HPS (red light) will help add to stretch and isn't idea for veg. Try sticking your plants under tube flouro 'cool white' shop lights and tying them down so that the canopy is even, continuous, and not very deep, and less than 3" from the lights. It's fine to keep them in veg like that until you are good and ready.
