But too much carbon dioxide will kill them. The roots aern't going to be able to get any oxygen if there is none available.

I highly, HIGHLY highly HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt it had ANYTHING, what so ever to do with the oxygen/carbon dioxide levels.

And the roots only need a minimal amount and that minimal amount will ALWAYS be there.
