    Acetone cleaning= ghetto honey oil?

I have done some research and I understand that THC would be very soluble in acetone. I tried to make some honey oil with butane, but the butane ingited, burning off my eyebrows and eye lashed. Plus singing my face slightly. So..im wondering if I dip my pipe and some other bowls in acetone for about an hour and then let it evaporate, will this clean my bowls. And will the remaining product be smokeable? Happy tokin

Acetone is not an appropriate solvent for making 'honey oil'. Even if you had access to pure acetone, it's still NOT a safe alternative to butane, and it's still HIGHLY flammable, so you don't reap any benefits from that, either. Acetone is dangerous and has no place in your cannabis consumption! Be safe!

If the butane ignited, you did it wrong. Honey oil, properly made and with the butane correctly evaporated off, will NOT ignite like that.

Stinky, i always made my hash oil with commercial acetone (60% acetone/40% ethanol) and sincerely dont know why does it would not be an alternative for butane... i know its highly flammable, but besides this, what do you think are the problems with using acetone?

Coelho, primarily I am very concerned with people who are unfamiliar with the ingredients in common household sources of solvents such as acetone using an inappropriate 'grade' of solvent for the job. Nail polish remover is the most obvious easily accessible form of acetone for the general public who don't have access to pure chemicals. But it's got OTHER solvents besides acetone which are potentially QUITE dangerous.

Acetone has addition chemical that can stay in your oil, Ive tried Acetone, 90 proof alcohol and butane gas...The 90 proof alcohol and butane worked the best, tasted better and was a cleaner high. But if thats all you got it can be done with acetone just make sure it totally evaporated for about 12 hours or very very low heat on a electric stove will evaporate all fluids.

Well... to evaporate the acetone i put the glass with it into a pan with water, and use an electric water heater to heat the water. So, the boiling water heats and evaporates the acetone.
Im sure most other chemicals evaporates also... as their boiling point is lower than waters.
Also... even if there is some chemical which remains in the hash oil, the amount of it is very small (as the amount of hash oil smoked is usually small). Considering that during the normal process of smoking weed there is production of a lot of smoke, with lots and lots of chemicals, tars, combustion products, etc, all in all smoking hash oil is still far healthier than smoking weed.

Some high molecular weight organic solvents are VERY difficult to evaporate, even under a vacuum. So that can be a dangerous assumption to make.

As for the amount, I concede that it's likely quite small; however, even tiny amounts of many substances are dangerous and this is something that I would not risk.

Coelho certainly you know what you're doing and it seems you have access to the proper materials so this advice is aimed at anyone who is rooting around under the sink to see what they've got to make hash of, lol.

Yeah dont take any risk with your health on stange chemicals but if thats the only way you can make, be safe. Also you can get the 90 proof alcohol at any store, its easier to find than acetone. Peace

Well... you are very right about this... i know enough of chemistry, but there is a lot of people which dont know, and its indeed a risky thing...
And even myself had to learn some things by the "hard way"... for example:

Once i bought what was supposed to be butane, but was actually lighter fluid (a mix of LOTS of hydrocarbons with all molecular weights)... and did make the hash oil with it anyway... that was not nice... even after the boiling water treatment, i still could feel the taste of the solvents in it...

Well... the composition of the commercial acetone i use is 60% acetone/40% ethanol... here it is sold at any drugstore at about US$ 5/liter as nail polish remover... im assuming that this 60% of acetone is of pure acetone... dont know how sure this assumption is, though.
And i also can get pure alcohol (96%) anywhere (supermarkets, drugstores) at very cheap prices too, but i prefer acetone because THC is far more soluble in it than in most other solvents (thus making the extraction faster), because it has a very low boiling point (so it evaporates faster and leaves less residues [if any] in the hash oil), and because it dont dissolve many pigments and other plant materials, yielding a purer hash oil.
Anyway, maybe the acetone sold in other countries has other substances mixed in it which make it less safe for use. So, anybody who were to try it must be sure of what one is doing.
