My belief is that too much of that just teaches them to be future kid-beaters and combatants themselves and sidesteps the whole issue of teaching them courtesy and respect for others.
When I was growing up, I got my ass torn up quite regularly... I figured I turned out ok. I pretty much learned a lot of lessons the hard way. I don't have a problem with kids getting their asses torn up when they do something that they KNOW is wrong, I would not have a problem with the PARENTS getting their asses torn up for letting a bunch of little hellions doing what they want with out the proper reinforcement...both good and bad.
Its NOT the schools job to raise children, nor are the schools a babysitting service. Its the parents job to raise and teach the kids right from wrong. Its the schools job to teach the kids reading, writing, and arithmetic.
