Hey all, just wanted to show off a vase I picked up yesterday, I'm too lazy to dig out my carbide and diamond bits to drill teh hole, but I will soon. I put my iPod next to it for size, I figure that by now in this age, you all know how big an iPod is... heh. :jointsmile:

I really bought this for my girl, but she thought the same thing I did when she first saw it, so we agreed on it, flowers one time, thats it. then tis mine, lawl.

Umm... BAD NEWS. IT BROKE. I tried using a combo of regualr and masonry bits like i used to do... because my diamond bits are at my dad's house far away....

It shattered into ~2651674654564 pieces.

The trick to drilling glass is water-cooling the bit and the piece.
Fill the piece with water, and then fill a dish-pan with water as well.
Hold the piece under water so that the water level is AT the site where you will be drilling. The bit should be constantly wet. The surrounding glass should also be wet, so that it does not heat unevenly, which is what causes cracking. Use smooth strokes and a firm pressure, but don't force it.

ive done it without water.you just have to go slow, but it makes this superfine glass dust I dont want to be anywhere near.

Oh yeah nuglove, the dust! OMG. That's another reason that water is very important. It keeps the particulate matter from becoming airborne. A dust mask is a good idea even so. Inhalation of glass dust is quite dangerous.

Yeah, I had all that... I think that it had something to do with resonance from the bits... i mean... its just shattered... it was really weird.
